A love-hate relationship

At least last week’s drama inspired this week’s column.

Mini-column ‘Alison in Wonderland’, published in the Observant, Maastricht

Doing a PhD: you love it, but you hate it, but really you love it. Yesterday, I was madly in love with mine. I was looking at progressives in Dutch people’s English, categorising thousands of them as correct or not. It’s more fun than it sounds. How is analysing –ing words fun, you ask? Oh, but it is. I can think of lots of less interesting things. Watching grass grow without a microscope, for example. So I had a stellar time, but then – I didn’t save the file properly. Yes, I know: who doesn’t save things right, in this day and age? At that point, of course, I hated my PhD with a passion. I kept telling myself, it’s like an adorable child that you can’t stay mad at for long. Only problem is, I hate kids.
